Meaning Etymologically, Chi-ch’en Itzá means “the city on the edge of the well of the Itzáes”. Access It is located 115 kilometers from the city of Mérida, Yucatán, taking the road No. 180 towards the town of Piste, from which the archaeological site is 2 kilometers away. The visitor can arrive at the site through public transport.   Cultural Importance Chichén Itzá is the best example of the migratory movements that occurred in Mesoamerica towards the Early Postclassic, since it gathers features of material culture from both the Maya area and central Mexico, particularly of Tolteca affiliation. Chichén Itzá was also the capital of a large territory in the Yucatan Peninsula, headed by the league of Mayapán, from 987 until 1200 AD. C. The Chichén Itzá archaeological zone is famous worldwide for the play of light and shadow that at each equinox occurs on the stairway of the pyramidal basement known as El castillo. In this, the sun, as it rises over the horizon, illuminates the west balcony of the base, creating triangles of light and shadow that seem to descend to the serpent head in the ruffle of the arch. This event, achieved from the correct orientation and inclination of the planes of the basement, it shows the great level of astronomical and architectural knowledge that the Mayans possessed, and that has led to being one of the most studied cultures and regions around these issues, in addition to the territorial political organization and the exploitation of resources. Chronology 525 to 1200 d. C. Acceso Se localiza a 115 kilómetros de la ciudad de Mérida, Yucatán, tomando la carretera No. 180 hacia el poblado de Piste, del cual dista 2 kilómetros el sitio arqueológico. El visitante puede arribar al sitio por medio del transporte público.   Importancia Cultural Chichén Itzá es el mejor ejemplo de los movimientos migratorios que se dieron en Mesoamérica hacia el Posclásico Temprano, ya que reúne rasgos de cultura material tanto del área Maya como del centro de México, particularmente de filiación Tolteca. Además Chichén Itzá fue capital de un amplio territorio en la península de Yucatán, encabezado por la liga de Mayapán, del 987 hasta el año 1200 d. C. La zona arqueológica Chichén Itzá es famosa mundialmente por el juego de luz y sombra que en cada equinoccio ocurre sobre la escalinata del basamento piramidal conocido como El castillo. En este, el sol, conforme asciende sobre el horizonte, va iluminando la alfarda poniente del basamento, creando triángulos de luz y sombra que parecen descender hasta la cabeza de serpiente en el desplante de la alfarda. Este evento, logrado a partir de la correcta orientación e inclinación de los planos del basamento, manifiesta el gran nivel de conocimiento astronómico y arquitectónico que los Mayas poseían, y que ha dado lugar a ser una de las culturas y regiones más estudiadas en torno a estos temas, además de la organización político territorial y la explotación de recursos. Horario Lunes a Domingo de 08:00 a 17:00 horas.   Cobro de acceso: 70 pesos Importante: Adicionalmente el Gobierno del Estado a través de la Agencia de Administración Fiscal de Yucatán cobra una admisión general de $172.00 y  para los mexicanos que acrediten la nacionalidad mediante una identificación oficial la admisión adicional será de $92.00.   Las personas físicas que acrediten la residencia en México están exentas de estos pagos los días domingo.
