One of the possible meanings and the most plausible, given its proximity to the lagoons, is that of “chopped water”. Cultural importance The city of Cobá was developed near five lakes that were a fundamental factor for its development and subsistence. With approximately 70km 2 of extension, the city was communicated by extensive raised ways of stone, known in Mayan language as sacbé(white path), variable length and width. The longest of them with 100 km., Arrives at the site of Yaxuná, very close to Chichén Itzá. The inhabitants of Cobá that did not belong to the powerful class, resided in the environs of the nucleus of the city, in houses very similar to those of the modern Mayas. The evidence of the first registered human settlements is between 100 BC and 300 AD, when we think that it consisted of a series of villages located in the vicinity of the lakes, whose economy was based on agriculture and hunting. Already between 300 and 600 d. C., Cobá was developed centralizing the economic and political power, controlling several nearby towns. The internal communication routes and to other towns and regions, constituted by more than 50 roads, were built between 600 AD and 800 AD, At that time, most of the stelae of the site are also erected. The construction boom of the city occurred between 800 and 1000 AD, when the road network was extended, new buildings were built and its relations with the Gulf Coast narrowed, while they decreased with the Peten region. Its hegemonic force began to weaken between 1000 and 1450 d. C., when he received new influences from more “Mexicanized” groups. A new architectural style is introduced and incorporated into existing constructions and most of its sculptured monuments, relocated in small platforms and niches. while they decreased with the Peten region. P’olé was an important commercial port and place of departure and arrival of pilgrimages to Cozumel. Cultural importance There is evidence of human settlements in the first three centuries of our era, but it only comes down to ceramic remains and some low platforms. By then, along the coast there were small villages of fishermen and farmers. An increase in population seems to occur between 600 and 900 d. C., reaching its maximum development during the five subsequent centuries as most sites on the east coast. The architecture of the large platforms with rounded corners and the presence of ceramic traditions from the north of the peninsula allow us to infer a cultural development very typical of the coast. In turn, the presence of polychrome ceramics and objects of jade, obsidian, rock crystal, etc., which are not found regionally, speaks of a close commercial link with both contemporary sites in the central Maya area, as with the highlands of Guatemala. Although during the Classic it was not a spectacular site, it does show a well-developed political, economic and social organization. It was between 1000 – 1550 d. C., when it grew and became important, like other settlements on the coast, and benefited mainly from marine resources and an important commercial route of cabotage that reached to Honduras. Being in front of the island of Cozumel, it became the main port of embarkation to the island, where many pilgrims crossed by canoe to go to the famous sanctuary of the Goddess Ixchel, now destroyed. During the first years of the Colony it continued being the port of exit and arrival of Cozumel, of this period the remains of a small church of the XVIth century are conserved. Cultural Importance Chichén Itzá is the best example of the migratory movements that occurred in Mesoamerica towards the Early Postclassic, since it gathers features of material culture from both the Maya area and central Mexico, particularly of Tolteca affiliation. Chichén Itzá was also the capital of a large territory in the Yucatan Peninsula, headed by the league of Mayapán, from 987 until 1200 AD. C. The Chichén Itzá archaeological zone is famous worldwide for the play of light and shadow that at each equinox occurs on the stairway of the pyramidal basement known as El castillo. In this, the sun, as it rises over the horizon, illuminates the west balcony of the base, creating triangles of light and shadow that seem to descend to the serpent head in the ruffle of the arch. This event, achieved from the correct orientation and inclination of the planes of the basement, it shows the great level of astronomical and architectural knowledge that the Mayans possessed, and that has led to being one of the most studied cultures and regions around these issues, in addition to the territorial political organization and the exploitation of resources. Hours Monday through Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Access charge: 70 pesos Important: Additionally, the State Government through the Tax Administration Agency of Yucatan charges a general admission of $ 172.00 and for Mexicans who prove the nationality through an official identification, the additional admission will be $ 92.00. However, some Maya speakers in the region also translate it as “lucero-jaguar”. In the Relation of Ek ‘Balam, written in 1579 by the encomendero Juan Gutiérrez Picón, it is mentioned that the name of the site comes from a great man named Ek Balam or Coch Cal Balam, who founded and governed it for 40 years. However, the archaeological evidence has not provided us with any proof of the existence of such a character. While in the emblem glyph found in stone monuments called The Hieroglyphic Serpents, it is mentioned as the name of the site in the Classic. Cultural Importance Ek’Balam (Star Jaguar) is a Mayan city that had its maximum development during the Late Classic / Terminal (600-850 / 900 AD) and that possibly was the seat of the kingdom of “Tlalol”. The first known king of Ek’Balam is Ukit Kan Le’t Tok (the father of the four flint fronts) who was the builder of most of the sumptuous palace that we now know as Acropolis and many other works. Likewise, he was the promoter of technical and cultural advances, as well as architectural and decorative wealth, whose best example is Structure 35 Sub, located inside the Acropolis and known as Sak Xok Nahh (White House of Reading ), which served as a tomb for Ukit Kan Le’t Tok, who was buried with a rich offering consisting of more than 7,000 pieces such as ceramic vessels, shell objects, Access It is located 190 kilometers east of the city of Mérida, Yucatán, taking Highway No. 295, which goes to Tizimín. The name of Tulum, is relatively recent, and is translated as “wall” or “palizada”, in reference to the wall that is conserved here. Cultural Importance Tulum is the most emblematic site of the coast of Quintana Roo, due to its privileged location and the excellent conservation of its buildings and mural paintings. It is well known for its wall, which delimits the main set by its north, south and west sides, since the eastern sector looks to the Caribbean Sea; It has five entrances and two watchtowers. The site is presided over by El Castillo, the highest basement in Tulum, which preserves a temple with three entrances decorated with serpentine columns and two zoomorphic masks at the corners. In front of the Castle there is a platform for dances and to the southwest is the Temple of the Initial Series, where the earliest date documented in Tulum was found: 564 AD To the north is the Temple of the Descending God, with a small basement on which a building decorated with the image of that deity, the main iconographic element of the city, was built. Facing this set is the main road, with several buildings; the most important is the Temple of the Frescoes, whose mural paintings portray a series of supernatural beings residing in the Underworld, which constitute one of the most important testimonies of prehispanic Mayan mural painting. Continuing along the road you can see the palaces known as the House of Columns and the House of the Halach Uinik. In the northeast access, the House of the Cenote, documents the importance that the Mayans gave to the aquatic cult linked to the cenotes, and near there is the Temple of the God of the Wind, named for its circular base, related to Kukulcán, god of the winds. Access It is located at km. 230 of the federal highway Chetumal – Cancun, 128 kilometers south of Cancun and is easily accessible through the federal highway 370. The cove of Xelhá is one of the most important of the coast of Quintana Roo since pre-Hispanic times because it is a natural area of shelter. Cultural Importance Xelhá was one of the main commercial ports of the Late Postclassic. As part of the route that can currently be done, you can see magnificent examples of mural painting, particularly in the so-called “Building of the Birds”, made between 200 and 600 AD In the Jaguar Group can also be seen a cat that gives its name to set, which was made between the middle Postclassic and the late (1200 – 1550 AD). The history of Xelhá can be summarized in two great periods. The first is located in the Early Classic (250 – 600 of our era), time in which this port was the largest and most important in the area; corresponding to its level, it had beautiful palaces decorated with mural paintings, which recall the strong presence that Teotihuacán had in the Mayan area at that time. It is believed that Xelhá functioned as the port of the great kingdom of Cobá, located inland, which was one of the most powerful cities of the peninsula. Xelhá lost relevance after 600 AD, when temples and palaces ceased to be built. However, the city and its inhabitants returned to prominence after 1200, when new port cities were built related to the commercial activity that characterized the Postclassic. Again, temples and palaces were built, including a wall that may have defended the city from maritime attacks. Upon the arrival of the Spaniards, Xelhá was almost abandoned. Many of its inhabitants died because of new diseases brought by Europeans and others fled from Spanish rule. By 1550, the site was in ruins. Access The archaeological site is located 115 kms. south of the city of Cancun and 16 kms. north of Tulum, on the west side of federal highway 307 Puerto Juárez – Chetumal. It should not be confused with the Xelhá Park, whose access is located in the east sector of the aforementioned road. The visitor can arrive at the site through public transport. Services available in the area Parking, ticketing and health services. Hours Monday to Sunday from 08:00 to 17:00 hours (last access at 16:30 hrs.). Recommendations Bring fresh and comfortable clothes, as well as low shoes, sunscreen and water.
